Controlling Bathroom Mold

We live in the south. Mold is something 100% of homes have to deal with, but it is even worse for those who live in warmer climates. Staying ahead of the issue is a must so that it doesn’t get out of control. I’m going to teach you the facts and how you can help control the issue in your home.

Let’s start with a simple definition of what mold is:

1. Any of various fungi that often cause disintegration of organic matter.
2. The growth of such fungi.

Molds are harmful. They have the potential to cause health effects including common colds, trouble breathing to big problems like cancer and central nervous system problems.
Molds can produce allergens that can trigger allergic reactions or even asthma attacks in people who already have allergies.

Let me share with you some tips for helping clean the mold.

Use your bathroom fan. I always make fun of Hubby for having the fan every time he spends time in there, but actually it is a good thing! It pulls the steam and moisture from the air. Opening the window can do the same thing. Our window is not in a convenient spot behind our tub, so the fan it is.

Keeping your bathroom door open when you are done showering goes right along with this. Keep the air moving around.

Keep the lights on. This is probably something I’ll never do unless I’m having a real issue, since I’m a turn off the lights freak. Mold likes the dark.

Clean the tub and shower regularly. Soap scum nourishes in the damp air. Spray it clean and wipe it dry.

Use vinegar! It does a great job with deodorizing and kills the mold too. Baking soda works great for scrubbing tubs too.

Kill the mold with 50% bleach and 50% water solution when you see it start to develop. Yuck!
